Narrative-Driven Approach

I find that we regularly rush into report development and forget one key element. To involve the audience! For me, this is the core reason why reports fail. How crazy is that? Ignoring end-user needs is unthinkable in any other profession. So why is it different in reporting?

Instead of engaging actual users, we often gather requirements from senior staff who don't understand the end users' daily needs.

That's why I use an industry-approved approach, enhanced by my own experience. The secret? We talk to the audience and uncover their needs, moving away from the ineffective "what do you want?" approach. By truly listening to end users, we create reports that exceed expectations and drive better decisions.

What areas do you focus on as part of the reporting process?
a close up of a white arrow pointing to the right

I focus on a comprehensive reporting process that includes storyboarding, envisioning, report design, model design, and report build. Each stage is crucial for creating reports that are not only insightful but also visually appealing. This involves everything from understanding the audience and objectives to designing relevant wireframes and building the final report.

What sets your reporting process apart from others?
a close up of a white arrow pointing to the right

It comes down to two things. First, I prioritise building solutions with the end users in mind. From my experience working with organisations across various industries, I've seen that 90% of reports fail because they don’t meet user needs. To address this, I use an approach that I've developed and enhanced to collect all the necessary elements for success. Second, I have a keen attention to detail, ensuring that our reports look as good as they perform. A report that answers key questions and meets objectives is crucial, but a well-designed report ensures that end users actually engage with it.

What are the deliverables of the reporting process?
a close up of a white arrow pointing to the right

The core deliverables include a bespoke report that helps you understand your objectives, whether you are on target, what's causing any deviations, and what actions you can take to reverse course. Additionally, I provide detailed wireframes, a well-structured data model, and a Power BI template file to ensure your future report development is cohesive in look and feel.

How is your approach tailored to different organisations?
a close up of a white arrow pointing to the right

My approach uses a set of tailored questions to gather the necessary information for creating insightful reporting solutions, regardless of the industry. With my consultancy background, I have tried and tested various methods and incorporated lessons learned to make my process adaptable and effective for each unique organisation.

How do you handle feedback during the reporting process?
a close up of a white arrow pointing to the right

Feedback is an essential part of my process. Between each stage, we will have a review session to ensure we are all aligned and satisfied before moving on to the next step. This iterative approach ensures the final product meets your expectations and delivers maximum value.

Do I really need help with reporting?
a close up of a white arrow pointing to the right

Having a professional with the right experience puts you a step ahead. Depending on your team's skills, some elements of my process can be done in-house, though likely not to the same standard. If you try to handle some elements yourself, I recommend seeking professional help for everything apart from report development. If all other steps are done correctly, they provide a step-by-step blueprint for developing the report. I also love sharing knowledge, so I can teach you my approach to use moving forward.

What about accessibility?
a close up of a white arrow pointing to the right

I'm glad you asked! Accessibility is a top priority for me. From the very beginning, I emphasise understanding the audience to ensure the reports are accessible and usable for everyone, meeting all necessary accessibility standards.

What kind of support do you offer after the reports are delivered?
a close up of a white arrow pointing to the right

I won’t disappear once the reports are published and the solution is in production. After we go live, we'll agree on a support period where I will be available to assist you every step of the way, ensuring a smooth transition and continued success.
